Teen charged with murder of 18-year-old TaQuan Pinkney

WASHINGTON - An arrest has been made in the murder case of an 18-year-old man who graduated from high school earlier this year, D.C. police said.

Officials said 17-year-old Elijah Jarmon has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder while armed (premeditated) in the shooting death of TaQuan Pinkney.

Pinkney was shot during the afternoon of Sept. 9 in the 2800 block of Stanton Road in Southeast D.C., police said. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. His family said he was walking to the store to buy a soda when he was shot.

The 18-year-old graduated from Suitland High School in Prince George's County in Maryland this past spring and was known as a role model to the kids in the Southeast D.C. community near his mother's home. Throughout high school, Pinkney came to Horton's Kids, a community center on Pomeroy Road in which he was involved with.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham tweeted Monday following the announcement of the arrest:

"We unnecessarily lost one of DC's future leaders in this homicide. Hoping this closure brings some peace to Taquan's family and friends."
