Speedy Tax Service eviction puts boxes of personal tax record on Northeast DC street

- The eviction of a tax service company put several boxes containing people’s personal tax records and information out on a Northeast D.C. street on Tuesday.

The U.S. Marshals removed everything from Speedy Tax Service on 8th Street, Northeast and put it on the curb. The items included chairs, desks and filing cabinets, but more importantly, it contained the personal tax records of several clients.

Among the personal information included social security numbers, out in plain sight on the sidewalk.

Video from the scene showed people sifting through the items and taking things like boxes and office furniture.

Employees from H Street Main Street heard about the files and came to collect them for safe keeping.

“I called the IRS and they said they didn’t know who else to talk to. I called the Justice Department and they didn’t know who else to talk to and what you have is no one is doing anything,” Anwar Saleem with H Street Main Street said. “This is just as important as dealing with someone’s credit card numbers. I feel for the people who had their information out there. There are boxes and files of this stuff and people can come by and pick this stuff up.”

Saleem said he called Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office who told him they would contact the Department of Public Works to collect the files and properly dispose of them.
