Small plane crashes near I-95 in Stafford County

Virginia State Police said a small plane crashed near Interstate 95 in Stafford County Monday afternoon.

A trooper responded to the report of the crash at around 5:33 p.m. Police said the aircraft crashed against an embankment near the southbound lanes of I-95 at the 137 mile marker.

"A single-seat, experimental aircraft was conducting a high-speed taxi on the runway of the Stafford Regional Airport, when the aircraft unintentionally lifted off the runway," said Virginia State Police in a news release. "The aircraft cleared the Centreport Parkway before crash-landing into an embankment alongside the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 at the 137 mile marker."

The pilot, 62-year-old Roberta Boucher of Fredericksburg, was transported to Mary Washington Hospital. She suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the southbound lanes of I-95 were reopened just after 6 p.m.

The FAA responded to the scene and the NTSB was notified about plane crash. Police are still investigating the crash.
