Racist graffiti found at skate park in Anne Arundel County

MAYO, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- Residents in a small Maryland community are saying enough is enough. Racist graffiti was found at a public skate park and now residents are taking the matter into their own hands.

Someone wrote a racist message in the middle of the ground and the N-word is written beside a figure hanging from a tree at the skate park.

"I actually got really pissed. I was mad," said a community member who did not want to be identified.

The man told FOX 5 he found the message on the ground and posted it online. He said it has been there for weeks for everyone to see.

The property is owned by the Mayo Civic Association but the lease is owned by Anne Arundel County to maintain the lot ran out, leaving no one in charge of clean up.

For almost a month, the message was visible until FOX 5 contacted someone affiliated with the association who decided to take this matter into his own hands.

"Got some paint, so I'm covering it up," said a community member who wanted to remain anonymous. "This does not represent our community."

Within minutes, a community member who wanted to remain anonymous got spray paint to cover the message.

"I'm really disappointed. We're letting people come and use the property. They should at least be respectful in their use," said the community member.

He says messages like this are hurtful everywhere.

"It is our neighbors. It's our neighbors using this, so it's an attack on the neighborhood," said the community member.

FOX 5 tried to contact Anne Arundel Police about this incident, but we have yet to hear back.

There are names that appeared below the graffiti but we don't know how those names are associated.
