PALMER PARK, Md. - A 23-year-old man who serves as a high school track coach and an elementary school teacher’s assistant in Prince George’s County has been arrested for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student, police say.
Charles Wolford was charged with sexual abuse of a minor, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense/person in position of authority.
Officials say Wolford worked as a track coach at Fairmont Heights High School in Hyattsville. He is also a teacher’s assistant at Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary School in Cheverly. The 23-year-old has been an employee with Prince George’s County Public Schools for four years and had no prior criminal record.
Police were informed about allegations against Wolford on Sunday by a parent and an investigation was launched. Investigators found Wolford and the teenage girl engaged in sexual acts in the past week. However, none of the sexual activity took place on school grounds, officials say.
“We have no reason to believe that there are additional victims in this case,” said Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski. “We believe that this is an extraordinarily inappropriate relationship, but that it is only the one youth and not others.”
Wolford is in the custody of the Department of Corrections, police say.
