Police arrest wanted carjacking suspect who escaped Fairfax County barricade situation

WASHINGTON - A man described as a "dangerous fugitive" has been arrested over a week after escaping a barricade situation in Fairfax County.

Police took Alton Thodos into custody after pursuing him from Fairfax County to the heart of D.C. Tuesday.

The 32-year-old fugitive's flight led FEMA to issue a 'shelter in place' alert at their Southwest DC headquarters.

Investigators said they were working to capture Thodos, who they say they spotted driving a stolen car near Little River Turnpike and Lincolnia Road in Alexandria earlier in the day.

Fairfax County officers say they tried to pull Thodos over, but he sped away. This led to a pursuit through Alexandria, Arlington County and D.C.

Police continued at the 500 block of C Street in Southwest DC where people at FEMA headquarters were told to 'shelter in place' as a precaution. Police say they lost sight of Thodos while in the District.

At around 1:30 p.m. he was spotted by officers and arrested by Prince George's County police at the 6200 block of Marlboro Pike in District Heights after bailing from the car - a source told FOX 5.

Prince George's County, Virginia State Police, US Park police and DC police assisted Fairfax County police with the arrest.

Thodos had been on the run since Sept. 29, when he was the subject of a barricade situation at the Virginia Lodge Motel at the 6000 block of Richmond Highway in Alexandria. After an hours-long standoff, Thodos escaped police by climbing into the ceiling of the motel.

Police said they were trying to find Thodos in order to serve him with arrest warrants. He had been wanted for grand larceny, credit card theft, credit card fraud and a probation violation, police say.

During the barricade situation, officials say Thodos threatened to harm himself if police entered. There was a woman in the room with him who later came out, giving police an opportunity to get inside. It was then that Thodos evaded police by climbing through the ceiling.

Charges related to offenses committed in Fairfax County are pending his extradition to Virginia, police say.
