3rd pedestrian struck, killed on Georgia Avenue in last 14 days, Montgomery County police say

A pedestrian was struck and killed in Montgomery County early Friday morning, according to authorities.

The Montgomery County Police Department said the fatal collision happened on Georgia Avenue at Reedie Drive near the Wheaton Metro Station at about 4:05 a.m. Authorities said the victim, 41-year-old Mauricio Leonidas Correra of Silver Spring, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the driver of the 2005 Ford Mustang, identified as 21-year-old Eric Thomas Correia of Silver Spring, remained at the scene. Video from the scene showed a vehicle with extensive damage to the windshield.

Officials closed Georgia Avenue between Veirs Mill Road and Reedie Drive as detectives investigated the scene but have since reopened the northbound lanes.

Authorities said this is the third pedestrian to be struck and killed in the area in 14 days. Tierno Siradiou Bah, 69, was struck and killed at Georgia Avenue and Glenallan Avenue on Monday and 58-year-old Leonel Reyes was struck and killed at Georgia Avenue and Veirs Mill Road on Aug. 11.
