Prince George's County officer shoots, kills murder suspect in Oxon Hill, officials say

OXON HILL, Md. - A suspect who had just shot and killed a victim at a Prince George's County liquor store was shot to death after being confronted by an officer outside the store, according to officials.

The Prince George's County Police Department said the suspect walked into Seitz Liquors in the 6200 block of Livingston Road where he shot and killed a victim at about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said as the suspect fled the store, he was confronted by an on-duty officer in an unmarked vehicle at an intersection nearby the liquor store when the shooting happened. The officer, who is a member of the police department's Robbery Suppression Team, saw the suspect run outside and engaged the suspect, according to officials.

"This individual is running at the police officer armed with a handgun," said Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski. "He shouts commands requesting that individual stop. That individual pays no heed to those commands and the officer is then in a position where he must discharge his weapon several times. That suspect is shot and falls to the ground."

"It was about seven shot and when I pulled up, I eventually saw the police officer out with his gun out and heard the seven shots," said witness Richard Gomez. "Everybody was running."

The suspect died on the street. Police said he was previously known to investigators, but they did not elaborate more on that.

Detectives are trying to determine a motive for the shooting inside the liquor store. Police said the victim in the liquor store shooting was not an employee or owner of the business.

Surveillance cameras on nearby businesses captured some of the events and there were dozens of people, inside and outside the store, who witnessed the shootings, according to police.

Prince George's County police's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
