NWS confirms tornado touched down in Fairfax County

A tornado touched down during severe weather in Fairfax County early Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS said the tornado, which registered as an EF-0, touched down near the softball field at Thomas Jefferson High School in Lincolnia at about 5:55 a.m.

The estimated max wind speed was 70 mph and the NWS said the maximum path width was 100 yards.

According to the NWS, the tornado traveled a path length of a quarter mile and damaged fences, two sheds, light poles and several trees.

The tornado was strong enough to throw a shipping container 100 yards, the NWS reported.

There were no injuries or deaths reported.

In Burke, officials said a woman was killed after a tree fell onto her home Monday evening.
