Mansion Murders Trial: Daron Wint's stepmother takes stand; prosecutors focus on Wint's Facebook use

Prosecutors in the Mansion Murders trial on Tuesday zeroed in on the suspect's whereabouts during the two days when the crimes took place. They called the defendant's stepmother to the stand and an expert on Facebook.

Daron Wint's stepmother told the court she did not see her stepson on May 13, 2015 - the day three members of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper were taken hostage in their Northwest D.C. home. She said on May 14, she did not see Wint until 6 p.m. when he drove up to the house and was alone in his van.

The jury was then shown surveillance footage of Wint and his brother, Darrell, at a Walmart store on Annapolis Road at 10:23 p.m. and 11:26 p.m. - the day the four victims were murdered. The brothers bought gloves, two backpacks and other items.

Wint's stepmother said on May 15, Wint was home all day. But the following day, the minivan was gone and her stepson had no explanation for where it was. He did not want to call the police. On May 17, Wint left for New York.

On cross examination by the defense, Wint's stepmother was asked if she saw blood on Wint or if he smelled of gasoline on May 14. She replied no to both.

The testimony on Tuesday afternoon featured Joshua Kauffman, an analyst with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who answered questions about Wint's use of his Facebook account. He showed the jury that on May 13 and May 14, the days of the crimes, a female friend of Wint sent him three messages looking for him. But he did not respond.

Wint was a prolific user of Facebook as he sent dozens of messages every day. However, on May 13 and 14, he had sent none.

The jury will hear more testimony Wednesday morning.
