Interstate 355 bridge over Monocacy River damaged, closure expected to last for months

Drivers traveling to Washington, D.C. through Frederick County, Maryland may need to find an alternate route after a bridge was damaged on Interstate 355 on Wednesday.

The bridge over the Monocacy River near Interstate 270 was damaged after it was struck by a tow truck that was attempting to remove a garbage truck that had caught fire on the bridge Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the bridge would be closed for about two months for repairs because the new beams would have to be made, put in place and then inspected.

The Maryland Department of Transportation is advising people who typically use Interstate 355 in the area of the bridge in Frederick County to use Interstate 270.

The detour along Interstate 270 is from Fingerboard Road to Buckeystown Pike.
