Check your freezer: Officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections linked to ground beef that has led to a recall. The recall impacts some stores in Maryland and Virginia.
The ground beef was produced by JBS Tolleson, Inc. of Arizona. The company recalled 6.9 million pounds of beef products on Oct. 4. The recalled beef products were produced and packaged from July 26 to Sept. 7. They were shipped to retailers nationwide under many brand names.
The Centers for Disease Control says 246 cases of people with salmonella infections have been reported in 25 states.
No reported cases of salmonella infections related to the ground beef recall have been reported in D.C., Maryland or Virginia at this time. A list released by the United States Department of Agriculture showing locations that received raw beef products that have been recalled included Sam’s Clubs in Virginia, Paramount Trading Corp in Frederick, Maryland and Sprouts in Towson, Maryland.
Officials say to look for beef labeled with the establishment number “EST. 267.” This is usually found inside the USDA mark of inspection but can be elsewhere on the package. Recalled beef should be returned to the store or thrown away.
