Gonzaga College High School hockey team honors Dominik Pettey in 3rd annual game

The Gonzaga College High School hockey team held its third annual Purple and White game to honor Dominik Pettey, who was killed in a car crash in 2014.

While previous years held a more somber tone, this year the team said they felt the game was growing more into a celebration of the life the 17-year-old senior.

"This is both a very somber event but also a very good time. We're celebrating his life," senior defenseman Henry Middlebrook said. "We're mourning and celebrating both and I think it reflects well on the life he lived."

Thursday's game helps to raise money for a scholarship in Pettey's name, which helps other students attend Gonzaga College High School. So far the team has raised more than $215,000 for the scholarship.

"They (the players) know they're a part of something that is bigger than them and that's what's really important," coach Bill Slater said.

Pettey's No. 11 remains retired and in the rafters at Fort Dupont Ice Arena.
