6-year-old girl shot in Southeast DC, police say

A 6-year-old girl was shot Thursday night in Southeast D.C., police say.

The victim was wounded in the lower body as she was walking with her family with their groceries into their apartment building in the 2700 block of Langston Place at around 9:28 p.m. According to police, the family did not see the shooter.

"They just heard gunshots and realized that the juvenile was shot," said D.C. Police Assistant Chief of Patrol Services South Chanel Dickerson."

Police say the child was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to a family friend, she was shot in her foot.

"Detectives and crime scene investigators are on the scene collecting the evidence," said Dickerson. "As you can see there is surveillance video in the area, so we have detectives reviewing the video footage and we will put out information as soon as possible because we need the public's help to find the people that committed this senseless act in this community where another young child suffered a gunshot wound."

There is no lookout information for a suspect at this time, police say.
