Fire at senior living center in Navy Yard remains under investigation

D.C. officials held a press conference on Friday to update the public on a massive blaze that ripped through a senior living center in Navy Yard.

The fire broke out at the Arthur Capper Senior Building in the 900 block of 5th Street at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. According to D.C. Fire and EMS, the fire may have started on the roof.

Firefighters, first responders and even nearby Marines rushed into the building to help evacuate the elderly as the blaze quickly spread. Four people were transported to the hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.

On Friday, D.C. officials said 102 seniors remained in hotel rooms and stated the Office of Aging is providing lunch and dinner to the victims daily.

Inspections will begin to determine if the structure is safe enough to re-enter as the investigation into whether the fire alarm and sprinkler systems were working, D.C. officials announced.

D.C. officials said the Arthur Capper Senior Recovery Fund has been established to help those impacted by the fire.
