Fairfax County music teacher arrested, charged with sexually abusing former students

ANNANDALE, Va. (FOX 5 DC) - Police have arrested and charged a 56-year-old music teacher from Fairfax County after they say he sexually abused two former students.

Authorities say Jeffrey Cummins was taken into custody Tuesday after his flight arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Detectives say they began their investigation in May 2018 when a juvenile came forward saying he had been inappropriately touched by Cummins over a period of several years. In January of 2019, police say another victim came forward telling investigators that he had also been abused for several years by Cummins.

Police say Cummins is a private music teacher and gives lessons in his Annandale home. He is also the founder and director of Virginia Music Adventures, a traveling music group for school-age children. Investigators believe the sexual abuse occurred both during music lessons and at other times when the juveniles were at his home.

In additions, Cummins is also the owner of two Huntington Learning Centers, one located in Tysons and the other in Springfield.

Cummins is facing eight felony counts of indecent liberties by a custodian.

On Wednesday, Eileen Huntington, CEO of the Huntington Learning Center, released the following statement regarding Cummins:

"Today we were made aware of allegations of abuse that occurred inside the home of one of our franchise owners in the Washington, DC area. We are shocked and appalled by this alleged behavior and are actively cooperating with police and investigators to the fullest extent possible. Our mission has always been to provide a safe and supportive environment for students, and although the alleged abuse did not occur inside one of our centers, we have nevertheless made the decision to close these two centers until further notice."
