Construction worker hurt in hit-and-run in Oxon Hill day Maryland's expanded Move Over law in effect

Police are searching for a driver they say was involved in the hit-and-run of a construction worker early Monday morning.

The incident was reported around 2 a.m. along the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 295 near exit 1A in the Oxon Hill area.

The construction worker, identified as 53-year-old Johnathan Wright, was hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities say Wright was working with a crew on the ramp as a subcontractor for the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and for unknown reasons got out of the work vehicle. Police believe Wright walked behind the lane closure in the travel lane of the ramp when he was struck by a vehicle.

Officers can only say that the vehicle involved was black. No other description of the vehicle is available at this time. The vehicle was last seen traveling on the ramp from southbound Interstate 295 to northbound Interstate 95 / 495.

Monday marks the first day Maryland's expanded Move Over law will be put into place. The Move Over law requires drivers approaching a vehicle from behind that has red, yellow or amber flashing lights and is stopped, standing or parked along the highway to, when possible, move over a lane.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
