Gov. Larry Hogan announced a $9 billion project to significantly improve traffic along the Capital Beltway, Interstate 270 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Hogan said the state plans to add four lanes to the Capital Beltway all the way from the American Legion Bridge to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

The governor said the state also planned to add four lanes along Interstate 270 from the Capital Beltway to Frederick, Maryland.

Maryland will also propose taking over ownership of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295) from the U.S. Department of the Interior and adding four lanes all the way from Baltimore to D.C.

Once completed, the governor's office said the project would deliver new express toll lanes, in addition to existing lanes on the three major highways.

"These three massive, unprecedented projects to widen I-495, I-270, and MD 295 will be absolutely transformative, and they will help Maryland citizens go about their daily lives in a more efficient and safer manner," Hogan said in a written statement. "Today, we are turning Maryland's celebrated innovation into real action. These projects will substantially and dramatically improve our state highway system and traffic in the region."
