Alexandria park triple shooting was murder-suicide, police say

Authorities have determined a triple shooting that left two teens dead and another injured in an Alexandria park Sunday night was a murder-suicide.

Police said Monday that 19-year-old Yerson Nunez Lopez, of Maryland, shot and killed a 17-year-old girl and wounded and injured a 15-year-old boy. A friend of the two victims told FOX 5 that Lopez was the girl's ex-boyfriend.

The shooting happened at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday at All Veterans Park on North Pickett Street. A neighbor said she heard multiple gunshots and a woman screaming.

When police arrived, they were not sure if there was a shooter on the loose and a Fairfax County police helicopter was used to search.

According to radio traffic, Lopez and the female victim were found dead in the park and the 15-year-old boy went to a nearby CVS store for help. He was rushed to the hospital and police said Monday that he was in stable condition.

Police have not identified the girl who was killed or the boy who was injured, but a friend said they are siblings who attended T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria.

The school sent a letter home to parents, reading in part, "As you may be aware, our school system was impacted by the shooting that occurred in the community on Sunday night resulting in the loss of a former Titan and significant injury to another Titan." The letter went on to say that counselors would be available for students.

Alexandria Police said their investigation into the shooting was ongoing and urged anyone with information to call Det. Bikeramijt Gill at (703) 746-6751.
