Prince William Co. police-involved shooting and unrelated double fatal shooting happen miles apart

Prince William County Police are investigating two unrelated shootings that happened just miles apart Sunday.

One suspect is in custody after police say he fired a gun at police without warning and was shot by officers in return.

Prince William County Police Chief Barry Barnard said officers were "ambushed" when they were called for reports of shots being fired on Laurel Street in Woodbridge.

Investigators say the suspect had been shooting at nearby houses with a rifle from the roof of a home, and proceeded to fire at officers when they arrived.

They say two officers returned fire and struck the suspect. Police then arrested him and brought him to the hospital.

Officials say the suspect shot a police cruiser several times, but no officers were injured.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, is expected to survive according to police.

In an unrelated incident, but less than six miles away on the same night, two people who were fatally shot in a car.

Investigators say two men were found inside a car that had driven over a curb into a wooded area at the 16800 block of Brandy Moor Loop in Woodbridge.

They were found suffering from gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead, according to detectives.

There is no word on a suspect from police.
