18-year-old woman shot in a hail of bullets in Anacostia, DC police say

WASHINGTON - An 18-year-old woman is the latest victim of gun violence in the District.

She was shot in the stomach today and told police she was an innocent bystander.

So far, there have been no arrests or suspects.

Victims described as "innocent bystanders" have been injured or killed in multiple shootings in recent months.

And now there are two cases where the victims are thought to have been just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

On Thursday night on Green Street in Southeast near Galen Street.

Police Chief Peter Newsham told FOX 5's Lindsay Watts that the 18-year-old injured on Thursday was outside with a group of people when shots were fired from a distance.

Police sources told FOX 5 that up to 19 shots were fired just before 5 p.m.

The details on the case are still murky - with no suspect or motive.

Sources told FOX 5 that it doesn't appear the woman had a connection to the crime.

The incident occurred just two days after Alexander Morse was shot in the head in Northwest. Morse remains in critical condition.

Police say Morse was shot after an argument between two groups of people on Kennedy and First streets on New Year's Day just after noon.

Investigators made an arrest in Morse's shooting on Wednesday.

Morse was a sports intern at FOX 5 in D.C. about 10 years ago.

On New Year's Day, there were at least six different shootings in the District.
