DC crews rescue man stuck on radio tower in frigid cold temperatures

Crews have rescued a worker who became stranded on a radio tower in the District on Wednesday.

For hours, rescue efforts were underway in the 6000 block of Georgia Avenue in Northwest D.C.

According to officials, the man, who is a contractor working for a cellphone company, had been stranded since about 10 a.m.

Firefighters said they were alerted by the man's co-workers at around 1:20 p.m. and officials believe the man may have been suffering from hypothermia and was no longer able to remove himself from the structure.

Firefighters' first attempt to rescue the man was unsuccessful. Officials said firefighters then used a 100-foot aerial ladder truck and their specialized rescue squad to retrieve the man.

The man was wearing a harness and was able to walk down the ladder safely at around 4:20 p.m. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Officials say the man was evaluated by EMS but declined to be transported to the hospital. He did, however, thank the firefighters for rescuing him, FOX 5's Ike Ejiochi reports.

Late Wednesday, a Department of Labor spokeswoman told FOX 5 there will be an OSHA investigation of this incident.
