Sanitation worker struck, killed by vehicle while working behind garbage truck

A sanitation worker killed Monday after he was struck by a vehicle while working behind his garbage truck was identified as 30-year-old Marcus Colbert.

City of Laurel spokesperson Audrey Barnes said Colbert was hired by the Department of Public Works as a laborer in September 2005, his father Ralph Brent has worked for DPW for 23 years and one of his cousins, Norman Hull has worked for DPW for 5 years.

“Working here was a family affair for Marcus “says DPW Director Robert Ferree.  “Marcus will be remembered for his infectious smile, his willingness to help everyone, and his strong work ethic—helping other crews finish their routes without being asked.”

According to officials, the driver of an SUV hit a parked car on Old Sandy Spring Road and Casulas Way and then slammed into Colbert who was working behind a City trash truck loading trash into the tailgate. Colbert is the City of Laurel’s first on the job fatality, according to a press release from the City of Laurel.

The accident happened in Laurel near the intersection of Old Sandy Spring Road at Casulas Way around 9:30 a.m. Monday.

As of Monday funeral arrangements had not been completed.
