John Cena on possible The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan rematch: 'Never say never'

WASHINGTON - Fifteen years ago, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Hulk Hogan faced off on an undercard match at Wrestlemania 18. Could history repeat itself? One incredible story and a few tweets later, there's talk of a rematch.

It all started when FOX 5 DC entertainment reporter Kevin McCarthy sat down with Johnson for an interview last week in Hawaii during a junket promoting "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle". At Johnson's request, McCarthy brought his original movie ticket stub from the first time he saw Jumanji in January 1996. Thinking back on his own mementos from over the years, Johnson said there was one thing he had collected as a kid that was still really that special now.

Johnson told a story about being at a WWF match at Madison Square Garden back in 1984. His dad, Rocky Johnson, was wrestling that night too, and he was watching the matches from the front row with his mom. Hulk Hogan, who had just come into the WWF, was wrestling Mr. Wonderful that night, and Johnson said he'll never forget it.

Hogan was wearing his signature bandana with "Hulkster" printed across the front. During the match, he threw the bandana into the crowd, and the then 12-year-old Johnson caught it! He was pumped, to say the least.

After the match, Johnson said he went into the dressing room to tell his dad what happened. He saw Hogan, and went over to say hello. To his surprise, Hogan wanted the bandana back. He said it was his last one and he didn't want to throw it out.

Johnson said he was disappointed, but Hogan stuck out his hand and said thanks-- not knowing how bad The Rock wanted it.

"He was like, 'Thanks man,' and I'm like, 'Oh... ok. You're welcome, Hulk!' And I was just so happy," Johnson recalled.

But, in the words of the Rock, here's how cool Hulk Hogan is. A few weeks later, Hogan went to Johnson's dad and handed him a new, signed "Hulkster" headband. He told him to thank Johnson for giving him his very last one back so he could make more.

After the interview, Kevin tweeted the video of Johnson telling that story and explained how it started. The Rock retweeted him and tagged Hogan, who responded a few times.

In the first tweet, Hogan said, "Yo Rock, your dad took care of me so that is just how I was taught to treat people, my brother. Only love."

In a second reply, Hogan said if The Rock needs another headband, they should have a rematch and see if he can take it from him. Hogan added, "Only love but I'm serious about the rematch brother."

Hogan and Johnson haven't wrestled since Wrestlemania 18, back in March 2002.

McCarthy ran into another wrestling legend Wednesday in D.C. John Cena was in town to read to kids at the Library of Congress, and McCarthy had the chance to ask him what he thought about a possible Hulk Hogan-The Rock rematch.

"My thoughts are the age-old adage that is WWE: Never say never," Cena said.

Will it happen? Only time will tell.
