What You’ll Do
This is a high-impact, central newsroom role requiring sharp editorial judgment, strong organizational skills, and the ability to lead breaking news coverage in real time.
- Lead Newsgathering Efforts: Generate story ideas and aggressively respond to breaking news for broadcast and digital platforms.
- Assignment Coordination: Organize daily coverage by assigning crews, tracking story development, and managing logistics for field teams.
- Real-Time News Monitoring: Monitor scanners, wires, social media, and community sources to identify and act on breaking news opportunities.
- Source Development: Build and maintain strong relationships with law enforcement, government agencies, and community partners to generate exclusive content.
- Content Communication: Clearly and efficiently communicate critical information to reporters, producers, and newsroom leadership.
- Multiplatform Support: Ensure content is gathered and shared for use across all platforms, including broadcast, digital, and social media.
- Collaborate for Impact: Work closely with reporters, anchors, photographers, producers, and managers to ensure accurate, timely, and compelling news coverage.
- Operational Excellence: Handle high-volume phone calls, emails, and incoming information while prioritizing urgent newsroom needs.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking a highly organized, solutions-driven journalist who excels under pressure and is passionate about leading breaking news coverage.
- Experience & Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience as an Assignment Editor in a medium to large television market.
- News Judgment: Strong ethical instincts and understanding of ethical and legal standards in journalism.
- Technical Acumen: Experience with newsroom systems such as iNews and proficiency in digital and social media newsgathering tools.
- Organizational Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across teams and with external partners.
- Pressure-Tested: Proven ability to think critically, solve problems quickly, and remain calm under pressure.
- Professionalism: Positive, collaborative attitude and a commitment to contributing to a strong newsroom culture.

Additional Details
FOX 5 / FOX 5 Plus operates 24/7. Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and breaking news situations. Candidates will be required to join the SAG-AFTRA Washington-Mid Atlantic Local union for the off-air news unit.
Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $35.50-35.86 per hour. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

This is a high-impact, dual-role position requiring an agile and creative journalist to contribute to our morning coverage.
- Anchor Multiple Newscast Blocks: Consistently deliver an engaging, high-energy performance while anchoring and reporting segments of the morning newscasts.
- Investigative Storytelling: Research, write, and report compelling, impactful stories and features on multiple media platforms against tight deadlines.
- Live Performance & Ad-Lib: Master the art of the unscripted moment, excelling in live, extended coverage of breaking news and conducting sharp, spontaneous interviews with newsmakers.
- Source Development: Proactively develop and maintain powerful source networks to generate original, attention-grabbing content.
- Multiplatform Engagement: Utilize all digital and social media channels to attract, inform, and engage the audience, driving conversations and viewer traffic back to the station.
- Collaborate for Impact: Work seamlessly with producers, editors, and photographers to ensure captivating, accurate news delivery that connects with viewers and drives ratings.
What We’re Looking For
We are searching for a curious, innovative, and pressure-tested professional with an engaging personality who is driven to dominate and be the first to report local breaking news.
- Experience & Education: A minimum 3-5 years of on-air anchoring and reporting in a top 20 major market or comparable market scale. Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field required.
- News Judgment: Superior news judgment and a strong, current understanding of local, national, and world events.
- Technical Acumen: Demonstrated expertise with modern newsroom computer systems, live technology, and non-linear editing tools.
- Digital Dominance & Brand Building: A demonstrated track record of using various digital platforms (social media, website, streaming) not just for news consumption, but for proactive news-breaking, building a community, and elevating the station’s brand and personal digital profile.
- Pressure-Tested: Proven ability to work accurately, efficiently, and calmly under extreme pressure and strict, often fluid, deadlines.
- Professionalism: Consistently displays a positive, supportive, and professional demeanor, contributing positively to the newsroom culture.

Additional Details
To be considered for this premier opportunity, candidates must submit a reel of recent on-air work demonstrating anchoring, reporting, and live breaking news abilities. This is primarily a morning shift, but as a 24/7 news operation flexibility for evenings, weekends, holidays, and breaking news coverage is essential. Candidates will be required to join the SAG-AFTRA Washington-Mid Atlantic Local union for the on-air news unit.
Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $67.30-83.70 per hour.
