Prince William County teen faces long recovery after being struck by hit-and-run driver during jog

A Prince William County teenager is scheduled for his fourth surgery Wednesday morning after being hit by a car and falling nearly 30 feet off a Manassas bridge.

Eighteen-year-old Ethan McLaurin was jogging along Lake Jackson Drive near Dumfries Road between 4:45 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck, according to his mother, Julia Sugden.

Shortly thereafter, Sugden said she called her son, wondering why he hadn't come home. She said he answered, complained his back hurt and didn't remember where he was. The family called police to help them search for him, eventually finding McLaurin over the side of a bridge embankment when they saw a light from his cellphone. Sugden had told him to turn it on.

McLaurin suffered multiple spinal fractures as well as a pelvic fracture, Sugden said, adding that he faces a lengthy recovery.

The vehicle that hit McLaurin did not stop, according to Prince William County police. They said it may have sustained damage to the front right side of the hood, headlight or front bumper. They are asking anyone with any information regarding the crash to call 703-792-7000.
