Winter Weather Advisory in effect for much of Maryland, Virginia and DC Monday evening

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of Maryland and Virginia Monday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The National Weather Service says a wintry mix can be expected for parts of north central, northern and western Maryland, as well as northwest and western Virginia.

They say Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Montgomery, Carroll, Howard as well as eastern Allegany, Baltimore City and County, northwest and Southeast Harford are affected in Maryland, as well as D.C. and central Northern Virginia counties.

To prepare, the DC Snow Team will deploy more than 200 trucks to salt District roads on Monday, January 8 starting at 9:00 a.m. Residents and motorists can register to receive important weather alerts from the District on their devices by signing up for AlertDC at alertdc.dc.gov.

To prepare for the precipitation, residents are encouraged to heed the following tips:

-- Take Metro as an alternative to driving.
-- If driving, do so cautiously and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.
-- Keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow. Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.
-- Be aware of hazardous road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in appearance and give drivers a false sense of security on the road.
-- Keep your gas tank full.
-- Drive carefully on bridges, ramps, and other elevated structures which can freeze before the roadway.

The NWS says either freezing rain or rain may become slippery in contact with cold ground surfaces. Sidewalks, roads and bridges may become icy during the the evening commute Monday.

The NWS says extreme Western Allegany County and the northern panhandle of West Virginia may be affected by a light glaze of ice, along with wet snow accumulation of one to three inches.
