Flooded roads, power outages after severe storms hit DC area

Flooding concerns hit the D.C. area Thursday, the morning after heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds swept through the region.

Thousands were without power and many drivers were stranded because of high water Wednesday night.

Parts of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway were closed Thursday due to flooding and areas in Annapolis were also under high water.

Downed trees and wires were also a major concern to motorists.

Virginia State Police say a man died in Appomattox County after his home was destroyed by a reported funnel cloud. A total of four people died in Virginia due to the powerful storms that passed through the region.

Montgomery County fire officials say a man was rescued after a basement wall collapsed onto him inside his Silver Spring home. The victim suffered serious injuries and the family has been displaced from the home.

Storms are still active on the Eastern Shore, but there are no active Tornado Warning currently in effect.

(AP) -- Hours after a tornado ripped through Waverly and killed three, tornado warnings continue to be posted by the National Weather Service.

A tornado Wednesday afternoon carved a 5-mile path through the farming community, killing a child and two men and damaging a number of structures.

But the weather service in Wakefield and Blacksburg said suspected tornadoes may have touched down in Fluvanna, Charles City and Mecklenburg counties.

In Appomattox County, a state employee took a picture of a funnel cloud.

State police said they had received no reports of injuries from Appomattox County.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for St. Mary's County in Maryland until 8:15 p.m.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency in response to the severe weather:

"The declaration will enable public safety agencies including the Virginia National Guard, Virginia State Police, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the Virginia Department of Transportation to devote every available resource to storm response and recovery."

A Tornado Warning has been issued for Calvert and St. Mary's County in Maryland until 7:45 p.m.

Virginia State Police say the three people killed in Waverly, Va. due to the severe storms that passed through the area are a 50-year-old man, a 26-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy. The three victims died after their mobile home was destroyed in the storm.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and Prince George's County in Maryland until 7:45 p.m.

Metro says bus service is experiencing delays of up to 45 minutes due to weather/traffic conditions.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Charles, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and Baltimore City in Maryland is in effect until 7 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard and Montgomery Counties in Maryland as well as Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Virginia until 6:45 p.m.

A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Spotsylvania County in Virginia until 9:15 p.m.

Virginia State Police say there have been three confirmed deaths and at least five structures damaged in Waverly, Virginia, due to the severe storms passing through the region. Reports of funnel clouds were seen in the area.

Police say much of Route 460 and Route 40 in the town are impassable and there are reports of flooding and high water in this area. Motorists are being recommended to avoid the area.

A Tornado Warning for Culpeper, Prince William, Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties in Virginia has been extended until 6 p.m.

A Tornado Warning has been issued until 5:45 p.m. for Spotsylvania and Stafford County in Virginia.

A Flash Flood Warning has also been issued until 8 p.m. for Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun and Warren County in Virginia and Berkeley and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Washington Counties in Maryland, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Virginia, and Berkeley and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia until 5:30 p.m.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties in Virginia until 5:15 pm.

The National Weather Service is warning of possible tornado threats during the evening rush for the D.C. region:

"A line of thunderstorms with some embedded tornadoes is heading towards the Washington and Baltimore metro areas. This line will likely cross the metro areas at the height of evening rush hours between 5 and 7 p.m.

"Stay alert for warnings and be prepared to seek shelter quickly. If your location is warned or if dangerous weather threatens."

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Spotsylvania Counties in Virginia until 5:15 p.m.

4:19 p.m.

(AP) -- Authorities say two people have died after powerful storms ripped through eastern Virginia, raising the death toll from the tornadoes and severe weather to five.

Ron Messina, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, said the two people were killed in the town of Waverly on Wednesday.

Messina could not provide the victims' identities or details about how they died. Three people were killed in Louisiana and Mississippi when tornadoes hit there Tuesday. Dozens of other people were injured.

The National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for an area in southeastern Virginia, with radar indicating a twister in Waverly.
