Flash Flood Watch in effect for DC region until Friday morning

D.C. area residents should be cautious of possible flooding as severe thunderstorms pass through on Thursday. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued until 11 a.m. Friday.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch had been issued for the District of Columbia and neighboring counties in Maryland and Virginia, but it was canceled early in those areas. But FOX 5's Mike Thomas said we could still see some possible storms and rain through the rest of the night.

However, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues until midnight for areas in central Virginia, southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore.

While these storms may cool us down from the extreme heat wave we have been experiencing over the past week, they have also brought a large amount of rainfall to parts of our region. The National Weather Service reported Doppler radar showing up to two inches of rain falling in Montgomery County, which produced some flash flooding in some parts of the county.

Authorities are warning drivers to be careful and not to drive vehicles into areas where the water covers the roadway. If you do encounter flood roadways, you are advised to "turn around, don't drown."
