Pepco: How to prepare for power outages

Pepco is warning customers to prepare for potential power outages as a result of Friday and Saturday's anticipated monster snowstorm. The utility company says the forecast of wet snow, blustery winds and freezing temperatures can jeopardize power lines.

"Our crews are prepared for this weather event and will work safely and diligently if there are any interruptions in power because of this storm," said Donna Cooper, President of Pepco.

Pepco says there are 150 internal linemen, 250 contractors and more than 200 tree crews available to respond to the storm, and utility companies in other states are prepared to help as needed.

Customers are reminded to stay clear of working crews and any wires hanging loose from poles or lying on the ground.

Report downed wires or outages by calling 877-737-2662, visiting pepco.com or using their mobile app. It is important to report outages and request a call back to verify that power has been restored.

To prepare for a potential outage, make sure your emergency kit includes the following items:

-- Battery-powered radio or television
-- Flashlight
-- First-aid kit
-- Battery-powered or windup clock
-- Extra batteries
--Special needs items
--Insulated cooler
--List of important and emergency phone numbers
