Heavy rain, flooding take toll on area roadways, Metro Stations during rush hour

As a heavy storm made its way through the DMV, the George Washington Memorial Parkway was shut down at Reagan National Airport after water flooded the roadway Tuesday afternoon.

This comes as fans from around the area headed to Nationals Park for the All-Star Game.

Arlington County Fire Department spokesperson Benjamin O'Bryant says about 40 people were pulled from approximately 25 cars on the parkway. There were no injuries reported, he says.

The fire department posted a video of the initial flooding, with water up to the doors of some of the cars. The Water Rescue Team was called to remove stranded pedestrians from their vehicles, fire officials say.

All lanes on the George Washington Memorial Parkway has reopened, officials say.

In D.C., rain came pouring into the Capitol South Metro station, which was captured on video and posted on Twitter.

The heavy rainfall broke several area records for July 17, according to the National Weather Service.

Reagan National Airport has reportedly reached 2.79 inches, breaking the record of 2.05 inches set in 1945. BWI Airport reached 2.53 inches, breaking the 1947 record of 2.25 inches, and Dulles International Airport saw 1.05 inches, breaking 0.6 inches set in 1988.

Area officials strongly discourage pedestrians and drivers from going through flood waters. Turn around, don't drown!
