Washington DC now in the spotlight with one of the longest pro sports championship droughts

WASHINGTON - The championship drought is no more. The city of Cleveland exorcised all of its sports demons as the Cavaliers stunned the Golden State Warriors by coming back from a 3 to 1 series deficit in the NBA Finals to win its first major sports championship in 52 years.

With Cleveland finally reaching the pinnacle, which city is next when it comes to sports futility?

Good news D.C. sports fans! It's not us! With cities with at least three major sports franchises of the four major U.S. sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL), Minneapolis-St. Paul has the longest drought after not winning a title since the Twins won the World Series in 1991.

But the bad news? Washington D.C. is next in line by only a few months as the 1991 Redskins were the last team in our area to lift up a championship trophy.

It has been an extremely long time since a D.C. team has even played for a title in the four major sports. The closest were the 1997-98 Washington Capitals, swept in their first and only Stanley Cup Finals.

In fact, even more depressing is since 1998, the Capitals, Redskins, Wizards/Bullets and Nationals have not even appeared in a professional major sports semifinal (Eastern Conference Final, National League Championship Series, NFC Championship Game).

While some D.C. fans are still living in the glory days of the Joe Gibbs-era and the three Lombardi trophies that currently shine proudly at Redskins Park, regular season and playoff disappointment has become the norm for D.C. sports teams.
