Washington Capitals buy ad in Las Vegas paper to congratulate Golden Knights on historic season
LAS VEGAS - In a move of pure class, the Washington Capitals took out a full-page ad in a Las Vegas newspaper to congratulate the Golden Knights on their historic season.
The Las Vegas Review Journal tweeted the advertisement on Tuesday, the same day the District held a parade to celebrate the Caps' Stanley Cup victory.
The ad reads, "Congratulations to the Vegas Golden Knights on the most successful inaugural season in the history of professional sports. World class ownership, front office, coaching staff and people. A magnificent team of talented, hard-working players and stars. A fantastic venue filled with passionate, loud and proud fans. It was an honor to compete against you in the Stanley Cup Final. You are truly VEGAS STRONG."
The Capitals defeated the Golden Knights on Thursday in Game 5 to claim the Stanley Cup.
After playing a significant role in healing a city scarred by a mass shooting shortly before their regular-season opener, the Knights went farther and accomplished more than any expansion team in modern sports history.
Vegas blew past the NHL expansion records for victories (51) and points (109) while winning the Pacific Division, and the upstarts then cut a swath through the Western Conference playoffs with 12 wins in 15 games.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
