H.D. Woodson player returns to court for championship win, days after shooting

- The H.D. Woodson Warriors made history on Sunday night, beating Friendship Collegiate 60-47 to capture the DCSAA State Championship and stay undefeated. But the first D.C. team to go undefeated since 1985 was almost missing one of its key players in this championship game.

Senior forward Kavon Montgomery was shot in the back near his home in northeast D.C., just hours after Woodson’s double overtime victory over Gonzaga-- in which he played a big role. Fortunately, the bullet only grazed his back.

His teammates quickly decided they would win this title for him—but on Sunday, they did it with him instead. Montgomery started in the championship game—just two days after the shooting. His story is emblematic of what this team goes through every day.

What happened to Montgomery can make you think that sports are insignificant, but this team that has overcome so much now has memories that will last a lifetime.
