Zoo releases new photo as panda cub Bei Bei continues to recover from bowel obstruction surgery

The National Zoo's youngest giant panda cub is continuing to recover after undergoing surgery to remove a mass of bamboo from his small intestine.

A new picture of Bei Bei posted online Monday shows him sitting in his indoor enclosure after taking his medicine - which the Zoo said was hidden inside of a sweet potato.

Officials say he has spent the last several days resting and sleeping inside. They also say that the fur on his belly that was shaved off for the surgery is already starting to grow back.

Bei Bei was taken to a veterinary hospital on Friday after showing signs of stomach discomfort and nausea on Thanksgiving. He later underwent surgery to remove a bowel obstruction and has been under observation since.
