MCLEAN, Va. - Fairfax County police have arrested a 35-year-old woman who they say killed her sister and mother then staged an elaborate ruse to make their deaths in a McLean home appear to be the result of a murder-suicide back in 2017.
After an indictment was handed down for Megan Hargan for the murders of 23-year-old Helena Hargan and 63-year-old Pamela Hargan, investigators quickly took Megan Hargan into custody near her home in Monongalia County, West Virginia.
She has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and two counts of using a firearm in committing a felony.
After initially telling FOX 5 they believed the two women had died in a domestic murder-suicide incident at the home on Dean Drive, police quickly determined that it had been staged.
Officials say Megan Hargan attempted fraudulent money transfers from her mother’s account the day of the murders, and also on the day before.
Police interviewed Megan Hargan the day the bodies were found, and then a few days later.
They said one of the victims was found in the bedroom, and the other was in a laundry room. Shell casings also found in the laundry room, while the murder weapon was found with the victim in the bedroom.
At the time, they said it appeared that Helena Hargan had killed her mother, and then turned the weapon on herself.
Police have not indicated what Megan Hargan's motive might have been for allegedly murdering her mother and sister.
