White House ignores request to turn blue for fallen Dallas officers

- President Barack Obama ignored a request made by a federal government police union to illuminate the White House in blue to honor five fallen officers killed in Dallas last week, according to a report by Police Magazine.

Flags were ordered lowered to half-staff by Obama to honor the Dallas officers.

Obama has lit up the White House to mark Breast cancer awareness in 2013, and to celebrate the Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage in 2015.

The request to light the White House in blue was made in a statement released Friday by Jon Adler, president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association.

“I respectfully ask that all elected officials drop their scripted speeches, and feel the pain resonating in Dallas and across the country. Light a blue candle and say a silent prayer, but don't insult the law enforcement community with perishable scripted gibberish. Five honorable heroes made the ultimate sacrifice in Dallas, and it would be a tribute to their service by illuminating the White House in blue."

In a recent Twitter poll, 62 percent of voters said "yes" that the White House should light up in blue to honor the fallen officers while 38 percent said "no."

Obama attended a memorial service in Dallas for the five officers on Tuesday.
