WASHINGTON - Two words: Free donuts! Must be National Donut Day.
National Donut Day was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army as a way to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. They were known as the "Doughnut Lassies," and they're often credited with making donuts popular in the U.S.
The holiday is celebrated on the first Friday in June each year, which this year falls on June 2, 2017. Here's a list of deals and freebies that are being offered at donut spots around the DC area to help you celebrate:
