Detectives search for human remains in Fairfax County

Police and the FBI were seen searching Holmes Run Park in the Lincolnia section of Fairfax County on Wednesday and Thursday for possible human remains. Police said they are investigating a tip that there may be bodies there.

Police have cordoned off a large section of the park as detectives investigate a tip.

"We don't know of any connections from the previous cases we have recently been investigating," said Fairfax County Police Lt. Brian Gaydos. "However preliminarily, we do believe this may have a gang connection to it. We don't know what type of crime, but the information that we are receiving is there may be a gang involvement."

Neighbors said they first noticed police in the neighborhood Tuesday night. By morning, the area was saturated with all sorts of equipment and K-9 teams.

A mobile command post was set up adjacent to the Parklawn Pool where we could see FBI personnel and others venturing into the woods in four-wheel utility vehicles.

About 200 yards from there behind some single family homes, investigators set up a tent with a perimeter protected by crime scene tape. The tent was open on all sides and appeared to be the kind used when police are trying to protect a scene from the rain and wind. What was being protected by the tent is still unclear.

At times during the day, an officer could be seen guarding the area.

As of Wednesday afternoon, police said they had not found any human remains.

One neighbor told FOX 5 that she heard gunfire in the park Sunday night and Tuesday night but was not concerned enough to contact the police.

"I saw a bunch of cadets combing the woods down there," said resident Steve Barrett. "People with surveying equipment and a command post down there. There were maybe 20 vehicles down there. They are putting a lot of resources in this."

It would not be the first time human remains would be found in this neighborhood. Back in May 2014, two gang members were found decapitated and buried in Holmes Run Park in a gang-related case.

Fairfax County police said detectives are also searching a second site at Tysons Pimmit Park in the Falls Church area of the county.
