Vigil held for child killed after getting hit by a car in Bowie

BOWIE, Md. (AP) -- Officials say a young girl is dead and her grandmother has two broken legs after they were struck by a van in Bowie.

Authorities say the two were walking Saturday afternoon at Laurel-Bowie Road and Old Chapel Road when they were struck.

Authorities say that the vehicle that hit them was trying to make a left turn off of Old Chapel Road onto Laurel-Bowie Road when it struck them.

Both the girl and her grandmother were taken to a hospital. The girl was pronounced dead and her grandmother is in serious condition.

The driver remained on the scene.

Police released the names of both. The Grandmother's name is Lazina Alae, , age 46 and the Grandaughter is
Dynesti Hope Lazina Maraj both from Bowie, Maryland.

On Sunday the the family of the 2-year old little girl went back to the scene of the accident where she was struck and killed

An investigation is ongoing.
