VA lawmakers push cell phone data collection bill

Some Virginia lawmakers are pushing a bill which would require law enforcement to get a search warrant before obtaining cellphone information through the use of something called a 'stingray.'

The device actually tricks your phone into thinking it's a cell tower, then starts collecting all the data in your phone. It is currently being used by federal authorities in Virginia.

The proposed bill would extend to this stingray technology what was already passed last year - that law enforcement must obtain a warrant before accessing cellphone data through a communications tower.

The bill will be considered on the house floor this week.
