Turkey giveaway continues as District marks anniversary of Marion Barry's death

Monday marks exactly one year since former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry passed away -- but a Thanksgiving tradition he began years ago continues. Thousands of turkeys were given away to Ward 8 residents during the District's annual Thanksgiving Giveaway.

Barry, who died last year at age 78, raised thousands of dollars each year to provide southeast D.C. residents with turkeys for their holiday feast.

The giveaway was being held at Malcolm X Elementary School in southeast from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and proof of residency is required.

Continuing the Legacy of the Turkey Give-Away. Working hard for the residents of Ward 8! All in the spirit of prosperity. #Ward8Rising
