One person was killed and one injured after a training helicopter crashed in Grayson County Tuesday night.

A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson said the crash happened just after 8:30 p.m. on Bennett Road near Howe, which is about 10 miles south of Sherman.

DPS said the owner of the helicopter, Matt Cavender, and an instructor, Daniel Katen, were flying when it lost power. They were unable to get the engine back on and the chopper crashed in a field.

Cavender got out and walked to a nearby house to ask for help.

"Yeah, he knocked on my door. We came down here and his buddy was trapped underneath there and we had to get him out. And then the rescue squad came. I hope the man makes it okay," said Jeff Lake, who lives nearby.

They performed CPR on Katen and was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. He died Wednesday morning.

Cavendar was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The NTSM was at the scene Wednesday to investigate the crash.
