Thousands take advantage of early voting in DC, Virginia

WASHINGTON - Early voting began over the weekend for residents in Washington D.C. and Virginia and the turnout has been very high as they begin to decide who will become the 45th President of the United States along with other local races.

Early voting in the nation's capital began on Saturday and a record number of voters came out and set a record previously set in 2012.

In Virginia, absentee voting began on Sunday. Fairfax County said that over 42,000 people have cast their in-person absentee ballot so far, which is over 15,000 more than 2012 with 15 days remaining until Election Day.

In Arlington County, in-person absentee voters are about 35 percent higher than at the same point in 2012 while ballots mailed have gone up 64 percent.

Early voting in Maryland begins on Oct. 27.
