Fire damages Silver Spring apartment building; dozens of residents displaced

An early morning fire at an apartment complex in Silver Spring has left several pets dead and forced a dozen residents out of their homes.

The two-alarm fire was reported around 5 a.m. in the 3800 block of Bel Pre Road at the Grand Bel Manor Apartments. The fire appeared to have been on the second and third floors of the building.

At least one person was injured and hospitalized. Authorities say the Red Cross is assisting more than 100 people. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
