Search continues for missing boater at Kent Island; separate fatal boat racing accident under

Maryland authorities are searching water near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge trying to find a man who went under when the boat he was in sank.

Maryland Natural Resources divers have been in the water searching for Javier Sotelo. FOX 5 spoke with Sotelo's brother on the phone and he said the family was on a boat near the bridge when the weather turned rough. Several waves hit the boat and then it started going down.

Some of the family had access to life vests, but Sotelo did not and stayed on the boat as it was sinking. He could not swim.

Officials say the rescue mission has turned into a recovery mission.

"We actually have side scan sonar that we're running to try to locate the subject if possible," said Maryland Natural Resources Police Sgt. John Buchanan. "We have divers standing by if we do find something with side scan and then we'll work from there."

Also, on the other side of Kent Island, investigators are looking into a speedboat racing accident that killed a child and injured seven others.

We are told by a witness that as the Thunder of the Narrows race was coming to an end, one race boat actually slammed into some of the spectator boats. The child that was killed was inside one of those boats while the others were transported to the hospital.

The boat race is one that many people come to watch every year.

"They throw up a 20- or 30-foot rooster tail, so you really can't see what happens beyond the boats – it's all left-hand turns -- so I guess when the water dropped, everyone was pointing over that way," said witness Phillip Poillon. "Then we saw the rescue boats heading that way and we knew something was wrong."

We are told many people sprang into action, including a law enforcement officer who was on the boat that was struck.

The Coast Guard is investigating.
