Rare identical triplets born

A couple in Detroit has become the proud parents to rare identical triplets.

All three boys are said to being doing well after spending their first month in a newborn intensive care unit.

Doctors say identical triplets are a rare occasion for them and that most are conceived due to high-dose fertility treatments - but not these three.

The newborns came as a complete shock for this couple who already has two boys.

"I always wanted a big family and I guess this is the way to do it, get them all at once," said mother Lauren Whiteley.

"It's always exciting to come across something you've never seen before, and identical triplets are such a rarity, we're very happy to be involved in something so rare," said Dr. Savitri Kumar.

"We are going through the diapers pretty quickly, but that's all right. We're making it work," said dad, Michael Whiteley.

According to research, when it comes to natural conception, the chance of having identical triplets varies from about 1-in-60,000 to 1-in-2,000,000!
