Police: Tanker truck driver tried to avoid crash on Interstate 95

New details are coming out about the four vehicle collision and fuel spill that snarled traffic on Interstate 95 in the area of Route 198 Tuesday morning.

According to a news release from Maryland State Police, the driver of a Ford Focus abruptly changed lanes and hit a Chevy Malibu in the rear. The tanker trailer tried to avoid both cars, but hit the Focus, causing the tanker to overturn. As that was happening, the tanker hit a Nissan Altima.

Due to the crash and resulting fuel leak, north and southbound lanes of I-95 were shut down for several hours. Two southbound lanes, which remained closed during part of the evening rush hour, reopened before 7 p.m.

The driver of the Focus was identified as Christopher Rhodes, 23, of Laurel. Rhodes is charged with following too closely, unsafe lane change, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, and reckless driving contributing to the collision.

Of the four drivers, only the driver of the Malibu, a 34-year-old woman, was injured.

Maryland State Police asks anyone with information about the crash to contact them at (301) 345-3101.
