Police search for woman driver they say struck officers following hit-and-run

Police are searching for a woman they say struck two officers while fleeing a traffic stop following her suspected involvement in a hit-and-run.

The incident began around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday when a motorist told police he was struck several times by a vehicle on Rosemont Avenue in Frederick. The victim was able to give police a description of the female driver and of her vehicle.

A short time later, police located the vehicle with the suspected driver inside. While they were speaking with the woman, police said she sped off striking two officers in the process.

Investigators have identified the female driver as 35-year-old Heather Marie Toms of Frederick. Toms faces multiple charges including assault, fleeing and eluding, and reckless and negligent driving.

Police say both officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released from the hospital.
