Shawn Michael Robinson, 27, of Alexandria, is charged with impersonating an officer.
Police say they got a call from the off-duty officer just before 1 a.m. Thursday. The off-duty officer had been driving on Benita Fitzgerald Drive in Dumfries when he noticed a white Crown Victoria following him. Police say while the suspicious vehicle was following him, the driver turned a spotlight that was affixed to the vehicle on. Believing the driver was another officer, the off-duty officer pulled over quickly.
According to police, the driver of the Crown Victoria, who was later identified as Robinson, never got out of the car, instead pulling alongside the off-duty officer's car and tried to make contact. That's when the off-duty officer identified himself to Robinson, who quickly sped off.
The off-duty officer called authorities and was able to give them the tag number of the vehicle, then followed it. Robinson and a passenger ran away, but police were able to identify the driver during their search. A warrant was issued, and Robinson turned himself in later on Thursday.
Robinson is being held without bond and has a March 4th court date scheduled.
